Financial aid (studiestöd) is money you can receive to help you pursue your studies.

There are various kinds of financial aid for studies.

  • If you will be attending upper secondary school, you may be eligible for a study allowance (studiehjälp), including a student grant.
  • If you will be attending a folk high school, adult secondary education programme (Komvux), national adult education programme, or another compulsory or upper secondary school, you may apply for student aid (studiemedel) starting in the autumn of the year that you turn 20.
  • If you will be attending a college or university, you may also apply for student aid (studiemedel).
  • If you will be studying abroad, you may apply for student aid (studiemedel). If you will be studying at the upper secondary level and are younger than 20, you may apply for a study allowance (studiehjälp) to attend school abroad.
  • If you will be attending a national upper secondary school and are deaf, hearing impaired or have another disability, you may apply for a study allowance for people with disabilities (Rg-bidrag).

Student aid includes both grants and loans. It is up to you whether you want to take out a loan. The other kinds of financial aid for studies are grants - in other words, you don't need to pay them back.
