How does Brexit affect my student finance?

It depends on whether you are going to study in the UK or whether you are a British citizen or a relative of a British citizen.

The EU and the UK have developed a withdrawal agreement that came into force on 1 February 2020, when the UK left the EU, and is valid until 31 December 2020. As far as student finance is concerned, the withdrawal agreement means the following:

Study with Swedish student finance in the UK

If you have started studying in the UK with student finance from CSN before 1 January 2021, you will continue to be entitled to student finance in the UK, as if the UK was an EU country, as long as you meet the other conditions for receiving student finance.

If you start studying in the UK after 31 December 2020, CSN will examine your right to student finance based on the UK being a non-EU/EEA country.

British citizen or family member of such

After Brexit, CSN reviews applications from British citizens in the same way we review applications from other third country nationals.

For citizens of countries outside the EU/EEA or Switzerland

However, if you are a British citizen or a family member of a British citizen you may after Brexit in some cases still be entitled to Swedish student finance in the same way as EU citizens.

If you have been granted residence status by the Migration Agency, CSN will assess if you also meet any of the conditions according to EU Law during your study period.

Similarly, family members of such a British citizen mentioned above shall continue to be regarded as family members of EU citizens in CSN’s review.

If you have a permanent right of residence, you may also be entitled to student finance.
