When can your loan be cancelled?

Repayment of your loan may be cancelled under certain circumstances. Cancellation means that you don't have to repay either all or part of your loan.

Repayment of your loan is cancelled:

  • when you reach a certain age
  • if you die
  • due to preparatory studies. That refers to when you have taken out a loan as an adult to study at the compulsory or upper secondary level, after which you studied at the post-secondary level.
  • if you have exceptional, individual reasons.

For more information regarding the cancellation of student loans as the result of preparatory studies, please contact CSN.

How do you apply?

If you reach a certain age or die, repayment of your loan is generally cancelled automatically. Loans for preparatory studies are also cancelled automatically in most cases. Otherwise you have to apply for cancellation. You can order the form:

  • in Mina sidor (only in Swedish)
  • by e-mail
  • over the phone.

CSN's e-mail addresses and phone numbers appear above under Contact us.

If you order the form in Mina sidor, log in with your personal identity number and personal code or electronic identification.
