Studies that qualify you for financial aid for studies

Compulsory and upper secondary education

This category includes studies at municipal upper secondary schools, adult secondary education programmes (Komvux), national adult education programmes, folk high schools and independent upper secondary schools.

The studies for which one may receive student aid are decided by either the government itself or the appropriate government bureau.

New courses are added and removed continuously and the list below is updated regularly. You will always find the current list of courses that one may receive student aid for in the appendix of the Study Support Ordinance. Unfortunately the Study Support Ordinance is only available in Swedish.

Compulsory and upper secondary education that qualify you for financial aid for studies

  • Municipal upper secondary schools
  • Independent upper secondary schools approved under the Education Act (Swedish Code of Statutes 1985:1100)
  • Adult secondary education programmes (Komvux), national adult education programmes and continuation courses that are not on contract
  • Folk high schools, studies at the compulsory level and studies equivalent to an adult secondary education programme (Komvux)

Other schools and courses

  • Preparatory courses at colleges and universities (prep year at college)
  • Upper secondary education in English arranged by the Municipality of Stockholm
  • Grännaskolan (Gränna International School), upper secondary education at a national boarding school
  • International secondary education for an International Baccalaureate (IB) degree
  • Hermods, education at the upper secondary level, as well as education for adults at the compulsory level
  • Lundsbergs Skola, upper secondary education at a national boarding school
  • Lycée Français Saint-Louis, education at the upper secondary level
  • Sigtunaskolan Humanistiska Läroverket, upper secondary education at a national boarding school and international upper secondary education
  • Municipality of Torsås, distance education at the upper secondary level
  • Tyska skolan (German School), education at the upper secondary level

Continuation courses and supplementary courses

This category includes continuation courses at adult secondary education programmes (Komvux), supplementary courses and some folk high school courses.

  • Folk high schools, courses other than those listed under Compulsory and Upper Secondary Education or Other Post-secondary Education

  • Gammelkroppa skogsskola (Gammelkroppa School of Forestry), in-service supervisor training
  • Samernas utbildningscentrum (Sami Educational Centre)
  • Flyinge AB, hovslagarutbildning (The Swedish Farrier School)
  • Sveriges Lantbruksuniversitet (Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences), inseminator instruction

This category includes colleges and universities that arrange preparatory courses.

Other post-secondary education

This category includes advanced vocation-oriented training courses (YH), folk high school recreation leader training, vocational courses at a folk high school lasting up to 80 weeks that are a continuation of upper secondary education, and education in arts and culture organised by private schools.

    • courses under the Regulation on Preparatory Eligibility Studies at Universities and Colleges (Swedish Code of Statutes 1992:819)
    • courses under the Ordinance on Contract Education at Universities and University Colleges (Swedish Code of Statutes 2002:760) - but you may receive financial aid for studies for contract education under the police training programmes at Umeå University and Linné University

Studies that do not qualify you for financial aid for studies

You cannot receive financial aid for:

  • contract education
  • post-graduate studies if you are or have been a doctoral student, or if you have received an educational grant for doctoral students
  • private studies, for example if you study for an exam without being enrolled in school
  • Swedish for Immigrants (sfi).

Who decides which studies qualify you for financial aid?

Either the government or one of its agencies decides which studies qualify you for financial aid. Approved Swedish studies appear in the Study Support Ordinance (Swedish Code of Statutes 2000:655) and its annex.
